What to Check Before Booking a Self-Drive Car

- Will they name a flat rupee figure for damage scenarios before you pick up the keys?
- Do they document the fuel level with a photo at pickup and return?
- Does their policy lean on vague language instead of committing to a number?
Before you commit to any self-drive booking in Bengaluru — ours or anyone else's — ask these questions and pay attention to the language of the answers.
Ask for the deposit timeline in writing
"A few days" is not a timeline. Ask for a specific number of business days, in writing, before you pay the deposit.
Ask for a damage figure, not a range
A cost pegged to the vehicle's value is not a number — it's a negotiation waiting to happen after you've already returned the car. Ask for a flat rupee figure per scenario, agreed before pickup.
Ask how fuel is recorded
A photo of the gauge at pickup and return, timestamped, is the only version that avoids a dispute. If a rental can't describe exactly how they record it, that's your answer.
Watch the wording, not just the numbers
An answer like "we'll assess it when you return the car," or a cost tied to a share of the vehicle's value rather than a fixed figure, means the same thing every time: the policy hasn't actually been decided yet. If you can't turn an answer into a specific number, keep asking.
